Rio de Janeiro, also known as the CidadeMaravilhosa (Marvellous City), Rio, is the second largest city in Brazil. Also, it is the third largest metropolis in South America. The city is situated on the Atlantic Ocean, in the southeastern region of the tropical zone of South America. It is commonly acknowledged as one of the world’s most beautiful urban center. Rio de Janeiro remains the well-known destination of Brazil due to its unique location, architecture, inhabitants, and lifestyle. At present, the city is a bustling city of Brazil that has been an extensively commercial center of the country.

History

The city was firstly seen by Spanish navigator Vicente YáñezPinzón, he viewed Brazil on January 26, 1500. It was founded by the Portuguese Estácio de Sá in 1565 after expelling the French. The name “Rio de Janeiro” was given to the city’s original site by Portuguese navigators who reached on January 1, 1502. They mistook the entry-point of the bay as the mouth of a river. “Rio” is a Portuguese word which means “river” and the word “Janeiro” stands for January. Hence, the city was named Cidade de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro representing the name of both São Sebastião and Dom Sebastião, the king of Portugal.

Climate

The climate of Rio is typically hot and humid. Cool ocean light winds temper the temperatures in the zone. The average temperature in the months of December to March are very hot, with the temperature from 35 to 39°C. However, apart from summer months, the temperatures range between 20 to 30°C (68 and 86°F) for the rest of the year. The annual average temperature is 23°C. The level of average annual precipitation is 1,080 mm.
