United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

United Nations Children’s Fund, abbreviated as UNICEF was established on 11 December 1946. Ludwik Rajchman, a Polish physician and the first chairman of UNICEF is regarded as the founder of the organization.

Initially, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children affected by World War II, it was established. Later, it increased its area of concern for both mothers and children in developing countries.

UNICEF has helped save children’s lives by providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more.

Its mission statement states that its mission is to advocate for the protection of children’s right, to help them meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.

In the year 2014, it collected the total revenue of 513 million USD. Since UNICEF is a non-commercial organization, it raises fund to support its campaigns.

Some of its fundraising activities done by UNICEF are:

Trick-Or-Treat

In this program, children collect money for UNICEF from the houses instead of candies or other gifts on Halloween night.

Sponsorship

In the year 2006, UNICEF got in an agreement with the Spanish football club Barcelona for 5 years. In the agreement, Barcelona will wear UNICEF logo on their jersey and the club will donate 1.5 million Euros.

After collecting funds, it closely works with other organizations like World Health Organizations and local governments to reach and help the needy.

UNICEF with the support from Gucci has been able to train more than 8700 teachers and educators, construct about 300 schools, supply 14,600 school desks, construct more than 1800 water and sanitation facilities. This is just one out of 1000’s example it has been doing.

It released data which stats that it is able to reduce under 5 children dying rate by 50% i.e. 12.6 million in 1990 to 6.6 million in  2012. Also, the report says that it has been able to save the lives of around 90 million children’s.

In a nutshell, it has been one of the largest organization which works for the benefit of children. It is working with other companies as well as governments.
